New Orleans Data News Weekly

Over 50 Years of Excellence

Over 50 years ago, Joseph “Scoop” Jones started a weekly journal that chronicled the lives of Black New Orleanians. Scoop told stories that were traditionally ignored in the mainstream news journals and papers; He focused on news and information that was quintessential to New Orleans’ African-American community. Through it crucial, breaking, and community-based story—especially during the Civil Rights Movement—Data News Weekly was dubbed “The People’s Paper”.

Now, 50 years later, Data News Weekly maintains the title “The People’s Paper,” as the print and online publication continues to service the New Orleans community. As journalism and news publication explore the new internet frontier, Data News Weekly stands by its founding mission principle of covering the stories that matter—no matter how big or small.
