The Xylom is an independent, nonprofit, worker-led news outlet reporting on the world’s most pressing health and environmental disparities. Founded in Atlanta in 2018, our name is derived from the Ancient Greek word ξύλον (xúlon), the plant tissue that transports water and nutrients from the roots up to the stems and leaves. According to the CUNY Newmark J-School AAPI Media Directory, we are the only Asian American-run news outlet dedicated to health, climate, and environmental coverage; our staff and contributors are now based across the United States and the world. Our reporting is collaborative, multilingual, and multimedial, with a focus on accountability, movements, and solutions. The Xylom has received recognition from the Asian American Journalists Association Journalism Excellence Awards, the Nonprofit News Awards, the Atlanta Press Club Awards, and the Anthem Awards.
